Under the Data Protection (Charges and Information) Regulations 2018, organisations, including sole traders, that use personal information have to pay a data protection fee, unless they are exempt. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) provides guidance about the fee on its website.
The guidance includes information on:
- whether you need to pay the fee;
- how much you need to pay;
- what to do if you are exempt from paying the fee; and
- whether you need a Data Protection Officer.
A guide to the fee and FAQs are also provided.
You can pay the fee from the ICO's website. You can also register if you are paying for the first time, and update the details about your registration.
